Deidra Roughs

I wanted something nice to post for my blog's 1 year anniversary, so i've been saving these scans since just before christmas.

While school's been out i've had time to do a bit of art that doesn't relate to robots or lighthouses... which is much needed, i think. It gets hard to draw for myself after a long day/week/month of working on the film. So i promised myself i'd take some time away from it over the holidays.

So with some of my free time I've been working on a collaborative project with my very talented friend, Robin Hall. Check out her blog if you haven't seen it. We had a bit of fun doing some super quick collaborations a few weeks back, and decided to try to do something a bit more finished together... which evolved into an extremely short sequential (2 pages) about a little girl named Deidra.

I'm not really sure how to credit these; i'm pretty sure we both touched nearly every drawing, good or bad ;)

Here's some of our first few drawings, trying to develop the personality and visual design of our as yet unnamed little girl.

These few are tightening up the design a bit, and trying to capture some fitting emotions for her. I think we'd decided on the narrative at this point, too.

Here's some composition and visual narrative studies...

A bit of color exploration over an almost finalized design,

And a first attempt at a sort of finished look panel...

Check out Robin's blog for some more Deidra sketches that I haven't posted here, as well as a few of the same maybe.. hehe.

I'll post the finished product up sometime soon. There's just a bit of painting left to do, and then some digital tweaks to lay on over top. There'll also be some artwork by Casper making an appearance - he helped us out with some location design, and did an amazing job. I don't want to spoil that though, so it'll get posted in it's final form in the sequential pages.

hey, thanks for all the encouraging comments guys. Like i've said before, i really appreciate them. They keep me motivated.

Anyhow, all the traditional work is done for this project now, but the scanner i normally use is temporarily out of commission... So it'll probably be a few days before we can scan things in and put it together. I'm thinking by next weekend it'll be done. Maybe i'll post some fresh work up somewhere in between though - i've been doodling more than usual lately.

Again, thanks for the comments!

I love the little red nose ;-)

And just a little grammar error... it's not sa lapin but son lapin ;-)
french is different than english for that... we conjugate with the object.

Happy new year Sam!!!

Geneviève - Robin's been doing a great job of translating little things here and there for me lately. I'm pretty much lost when it comes to french, without her help. Thanks for the correction! :) I'm glad you like the drawings, as well. Hopefully you'll like the finished product just as much.

Robin - No worries! You did a bit better than i could've, i think. heh

I know you're going to exclaim something about another person commenting on your blog, and it'll make you all frantic for a second to see who it could possibly be...

but it's just me, haha!

I realize I never left any normal comment, like a normal person, and I have to say I can't wait until we get the finish piece up for display! it's going to rock.

Okay, you can go back to being less excited now... I know comments can do that to you, but really, you don't have to work yourself up so much, considering it's just me posting.

I'm done.

:) talk to you later, and good work!
